Inspirational Design of the Week: The UP Dining Table by Christopher Fuffy

We really admire the design of this dining table by Christopher Duffy, dubbed the UP Dining Table. The table features a glass tabletop suspended by reflective gold and silver balloons — it somehow manages to be both whimsical, and modern at the same time. The designer used toughened glass, metal resin composite, and toughened steel rods to create the table, which could easily double as a piece of art!

The design is so unique, it’s being sold as a limited edition. Only 20 tables in total will be in circulation. What do you think of Duffy’s design?

Incredible design is what inspires us the most! Have you checked out our unique portraits yet?

Portable Indoor/Outdoor Gel Fireplace

It’s modern, it’s elegant, and best of all it’s portable. Check out this uniquely designed indoor/outdoor gel fireplace by Holly & Martin. We have absolutely fallen in love with it’s floating glass panels, beautifully held in place with a brushed nickel base. We can picture it making a great addition to an outdoor space on a cool summer night, or a chic and modern loft in need of a little warmth.

Posted in Inspirational Design of the Week, Just Cool, Science by Courtney on February 21st, 2013

You know that we love designs that combine art + science, but for our inspiration of the week we’ve chosen to feature a design that combines furniture + science instead. Via Tech Nation News:

Why step outside to gaze at the moon when you can just admire your credenza? This design by Sotirios Papadopoulos features a photo-realistic image of the moon that has been treated with special material so that it glows in the dark. It will absorb the lights of the sun and in your home during the day and be luminescent at night.

There are only 24 of these credenzas available, and they ship with a CD of original music designed to go with the piece. I hope it includes recordings of howling wolves.

Portraits come in all shapes and sizes, and New York artist Michael Mapes is a genius at capturing the essence of his subjects is a truly unique way. We love it when art meets science!
Via Colossal:

He creates elaborate specimen boxes by dissecting photographs and then compartmentalizing individual fragments within plastic bags, glass vials, magnifiers, in gelatin capsules and on insect pins. The boxes exist in an uncanny area between photography and sculpture, functioning both as portraits and as fascinating scientific canvases that make you question the the logic behind the organization of each piece.

Michael’s boxes feature thousands of individual specimens of dissected photographs and biographical DNA like hair, finger nails, scent, eye lashes, fingerprints, food, botanical elements, fabric swatches, makeup, dirt, handwriting samples and breath.

Learn more about Michael and his work in his interview with the Huffington Post.
